What's free

Caliu is free to use, and the free plan is a full notes app, not a trial. This page spells out what it includes and where its one limit sits.

What the free plan includes

  • Local-first notes. Your notes live on your device and everything works offline: writing, tags, search, reminders, and export to Markdown and plain text.
  • No account needed. You can write in Caliu without signing up, for as long as you like.
  • Free sync. Create an account and your notes sync across the web app, the iPhone and iPad app, and the Mac app at no cost. Sync is never a paid feature.
  • 50 notes for new users. New accounts, and devices that start using Caliu without an account, can hold up to 50 notes on the free plan.

What counts toward the 50 notes

The limit counts every note outside the trash: active notes and archived notes together. Archiving a note does not free up a slot.

Notes in the trash do not count, because the trash empties itself 30 days after you delete a note. Move a note to the trash and you can create a new one right away.

What keeps working at the limit

Reaching 50 notes never locks you out. Editing, search, tags, reminders, sharing, export, and sync all keep working exactly as before. The only thing Caliu blocks is creating note 51 in the app: instead of a blank note you see the Caliu Pro screen, and you can close it and keep working.

Signing in with more notes than the limit

The limit only applies to creating notes in the app. If you sign in on a device that already holds more than 50 notes, every one of them is pushed to your account and stays available on all your devices. Notes that arrive through the API or the MCP server, and text appended to an existing note from the share sheet or the watch, are kept too, even beyond the limit. What the limit stops is creating a new note, whether from the app, a Shortcut, or the share sheet. The counter simply shows, for example, "56 of 50 notes", and creating new notes in the app waits until you make room or upgrade.

Existing accounts keep unlimited notes

The 50-note limit is for new users only. Accounts created before it was introduced, and devices that already had notes in Caliu before then, keep unlimited notes forever, with nothing to do on your side.

Two ways to lift the limit

  • Caliu Pro, a monthly or yearly subscription.
  • Pro lifetime, a one-time purchase.

Both make notes unlimited and unlock the same set of Pro features. See "What is Caliu Pro?" in this section for the details.
