MCP server for developers

Caliu ships an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, so AI agents can search, read, create, and update your notes, upload and read back images and files, and browse your tags. It exposes 13 focused tools rather than mirroring every API endpoint. To connect Claude, ChatGPT, or another chat assistant, the Caliu with AI section has step by step guides. This article covers developer tools.

Option 1: remote server with OAuth

The remote endpoint is https://api.caliuapp.com/mcp (Streamable HTTP). There is no key to copy: the client sends you to a consent screen where you sign in to Caliu and approve access. Approved clients appear under Connected apps in the web app's user menu, where you can revoke them anytime.

In Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http caliu https://api.caliuapp.com/mcp

In Cursor (~/.cursor/mcp.json) and other clients that read an mcpServers config:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "caliu": {
      "url": "https://api.caliuapp.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

In VS Code (.vscode/mcp.json):

{
  "servers": {
    "caliu": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://api.caliuapp.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Option 2: local server with an API key

Create an API key (see the API keys article), then add this to your MCP client's configuration:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "caliu": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@caliu-notes/mcp"],
      "env": {
        "CALIU_API_KEY": "caliu_your_api_key_here"
      }
    }
  }
}

Agents just write Markdown

There are no tag-management tools on purpose. Tags in Caliu derive from #hashtags in note content, so an agent that writes #work/ideas in a note has already tagged it. The same goes for links: write [[Note Title]] in a note and Caliu resolves it to a real note link automatically. Both options run the exact same tools.
